HKTB “2024 Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races” Conclude in Success with Crowds of Locals and Visitors Cheering Athletes along Tsim Sha Tsui Harbourfront

The “2024 Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races” organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and the Hong Kong, China Dragon Boat Association (HKCDBA) concluded in success today (16 June) as crowds of spectators on the Tsim Sha Tsui harbourfront revelled in the festive atmosphere and cheered athletes across the finishing line while enjoying themselves with the refreshments available on site, passionately embracing the early summer. In addition, to extend the Dragon Boat festivity into the evenings, HKTB staged a drone show on the Wan Chai harbourfront on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival to offer holidaymakers a vibrant festival experience. 

“Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races” draw athletes from around the world 

The “2024 Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races” featured 17 races with more than 170 teams comprising over 4,000 athletes from 12 countries and regions. The athletes competed in a series of thrilling races along the East Tsim Sha Tsui harbourfront, cheered on by huge crowds.

HKTB Chairman Dr Pang Yiu-kai, Mr Fang Jianming, Deputy Commissioner of the Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR , Mr Perry Yiu and Mr Kenneth Fok , Legislative Council Members, Ms Vivian Sum, Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Wilfred Ng, Chairman of the Major Sports Events Committee, Mr Claudio Schermi, President of the International Dragon Boat Federation, and Mr Kenny Lo, HKCDBA President officiate at the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races.

A new event of this year, the “PRC 75th Anniversary Celebration Trophy” consists of three races sponsored by China Travel Service (Hong Kong). Two teams from Guangdong win the International Women’s Grand Championship and International Mixed Grand Championship respectively. Another team from Guangdong wins the International Open Grand Championship, followed by The Thai and Taiwanese teams, receiving the trophies from Mr Eric Chan, Chief Secretary for Administration for the Hong Kong SAR.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Championship gathers 11 top teams from Zhongshan, Foshan, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhaoqing, as well as Hong Kong and Macau. The team from Zhuhai wins and receives the trophy from Mr Kevin Yeung, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Team “Sai Kung” wins the 18 District Trophy and receives the award from Mr Yeung Wai-sing, Chairman of the Federation of District Sports Associations of Hong Kong.

Summer flavours, photo spots on Avenue of Stars and drone show in Wan Chai light up festivities 

Before the start of the Races, the Avenue of Stars in East Tsim Sha Tsui began hosting summer activities including Summer Chill Food Lane and the LINE FRIENDS Hong Kong Summer Chill photo installations*, offering visitors a delightful mixture of fun and refreshments. Photo booths with LINE FRIENDS characters gave people the chance to capture the summer excitement on their phones. HKTB also staged a dragon boat-themed drone show on 10 June, which attracted large crowds to the Wan Chai harbourfront.
