The Former Residence of Liang Qichao
The former residence of Liang Qichao is located at No. 8 Zhongcun Erxiang, Chakeng Village, Huicheng Sub-district, Xinhui District. The house was built during the Qing Dynasty and is the birthplace and childhood home of Mr. Liang Qichao. It was designated as a key cultural relic protection unit in Xinhui County in 1983 and as a national key cultural relic protection unit in 1996.
The Yitang Study Room in the residence was where Liang Qichao studied and received traditional Confucian education during his youth. The study room is a three-bay, two-wing structure, with a deity altar positioned along the rear eaves wall of the central hall. On both the left and right wings, there are wooden staircases leading to the second-floor loft, and the two side corridors have rooftop terraces, which can be accessed from the loft. The main entrance is located at the front of the left side of the main building, with doors in the wings and side corridors at the porch area.
The layout of the house features a corridor: the eastern side shares a wall with the residence, the southeast corner serves as the vestibule, and the western side shares a wall with the Yitang Study Room. The central area is a garden. The main entrance is on the left side of the Yitang Study Room. The vestibule has a vaulted roof with a hipped gable, while the rest of the building has single-pitch gable roofs.
Liang Qichao (1873–1929) was a prominent modern Chinese thinker, politician, educator, historian, and writer. His former residence serves as an important cultural and historical site for studying his growth, the development of his thoughts, and promoting academic exchanges on his intellectual legacy both domestically and internationally. It is not only a tangible historical witness to his extraordinary life and achievements, but also an important patriotic education base and a valuable resource for historical and cultural studies.
