Former Site of Lingnan University is located within Sun Yat-sen University at No. 135 Xin’gang West Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou. In 1888, Americans established the Gezhi Academy, which relocated to the vicinity of Kangle Village in 1904, thus earning the name Kangle Garden. In 1912, it was renamed Lingnan School, and by 1916, it had developed into Lingnan University (a liberal arts and sciences university). In 1927, it was reclaimed and operated independently by Chinese stakeholders, leading to the formation of the Lingnan University Board of Trustees with Sun Ke as Chairman and Dr. Zhong Rongguang as the first President. In 1952, Lingnan University's arts and sciences departments merged with Sun Yat-sen University, and the site became part of Sun Yat-sen University's campus.
The early buildings of Kangle Garden are exemplary of the introduction of Western architectural techniques in modern China. Most of the structures are characterized by solid red brick walls, green glazed tile roofs, and reinforced concrete construction, with some buildings featuring basements. To this day, several buildings of significant historical and cultural value are preserved, including the Lingnan University academic buildings, the affiliated middle and primary school buildings, Western-style faculty residences on Magangding, the Chinese professors’ Model Village, the bronze statue of Sun Yat-sen, and the Archway of the Seven Scholars.
In 2002, the site was designated as a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Unit.
