Songtang Huichuan Family Academy and Peiyuan Study Hall
The Songtang Huichuan Family Academy and Peiyuan Study Hall are located in Songtang Village, Xiqiao Town, a historic and culturally significant village in China. Both are Foshan Municipal Cultural Relic Protection Units.
The Huichuan Family Academy was established in the third year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, with its name symbolizing the idea of "embracing all rivers" or "inclusiveness." The plaque was inscribed by Wu Risheng, a native of Dapu, Guangdong, and a Hanlin (Imperial Academy graduate) in the third year of Guangxu. In 2021, it was recognized as a Guangdong Provincial Family Education and Family Values Practice Base. After restoration, the academy continues its educational function and has become a base for local children to learn calligraphy and cultural traditions.
Peiyuan Study Hall was built by the wealthy local figure Qu Youxiu during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. The study hall is an impressive and grand structure, reflecting the values of Songtang villagers who, while striving for prosperity, have always cherished education. Inside Peiyuan Study Hall are 108 stone tablets, which feature calligraphy from the Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties. These tablets were originally collected by the wealthy Guangzhou merchant Pan Shicheng during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty and displayed at his Haishan Xianguan Hall. Qu Youxiu purchased the tablets and displayed them here, hoping to educate his descendants through the writings inscribed on these stones.
