Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (Chen Clan Academy)
Located at No. 34 Enlong Li, Zhongshan Seventh Road, Liwan District, Guangzhou. The construction of the hall was initiated in the 14th year of the Guangxu reign (1888) and completed in the 19th year of the same reign (1893). It was funded by the Chen clans from various counties in Guangdong during the Qing Dynasty and served as a communal ancestral hall. The hall provided temporary accommodation for Chen clan members coming to Guangzhou for imperial examinations, official appointments, tax submissions, and legal affairs.
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is one of the largest, best-preserved, and most elaborately decorated ancestral halls in Guangdong, acclaimed as “the pearl of Lingnan architectural art.” It embodies the pinnacle of Lingnan architectural craftsmanship, showcasing exquisite stone carvings, wood carvings, brick carvings, ceramic sculptures, plaster sculptures, and copper and iron castings, along with painted murals.
The Guangdong Folk Art Museum was established on the premises of the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall in 1959. It is an art museum dedicated to the collection, research, and exhibition of folk crafts, primarily from Guangdong and other regions of China. In 2017, it was recognized as a national first-class museum. The museum houses a collection of 20,000 pieces, including valuable cultural relics and modern art masterpieces. These collections cover nearly all traditional arts and crafts from Guangdong that are listed as national intangible cultural heritage, with highlights including Shiwan pottery, Guangzhou colored porcelain, Canton embroidery, Chaozhou embroidery, ivory carvings, Chaozhou wood carvings, Duan inkstones, and paper cuttings. The museum offers visitors an introduction to and display of folk art rich in Lingnan cultural traditions and local characteristics, making it an important platform for the research, exhibition, and promotion of folk crafts in Guangdong.
In 1988, it was designated as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit.
