Located at the foot of Luofeng Mountain in Luofeng Community, Luogang Subdistrict, Huangpu District, Guangzhou, Yuyan Academy was originally established in the third year of Emperor Xiaozong's reign during the Southern Song Dynasty (1163). Initially named Zhongde Hermitage, it was built by Zhong Suihe, the founding ancestor of the Zhong clan in Luogang. During the Yuan Dynasty, Zhong Fuchang, the great-grandson of Zhong Yuyan, renamed it Yuyan Academy, making it one of the oldest academies in Guangzhou. Over the centuries, the academy underwent several renovations, and the current structure dates back to the Qing Dynasty. Built along the mountainside, its buildings—including Yuqing Tower, Yuyan Hall, Luokeng Study, the Eastern and Western Halls—are connected by eaved corridors to the Guanyin Hall, Tianzun Hall, and Weituo Shrine of Luofeng Temple, creating a serene and elegant setting. Yuyan Academy, in harmony with the famed "Luogang Fragrant Snow," has been renowned since the Ming Dynasty.
Notable figures such as Zhu De, Tao Zhu, and Guo Moruo, as well as numerous foreign dignitaries and visitors, have left their footprints here.
In 2008, Yuyan Academy and Luofeng Temple were designated as Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Unit. This designation includes Yuyan Academy, Luofeng Temple, the Tomb of Zhong Yuyan, the Zhong Clan Ancestral Hall, the Shrine of the General Bestowed with Honor, and the Six Shrines of the Zhong Clan. The site is now managed by the Guangzhou Maritime Museum.
