Former Site of Dongguan County Museum and Library
The Former Site of Dongguan County Museum and Library is located in the People's Park in the center of Dongguan City. The museum was founded in 1928 by Xu Jingtang, the chairman of Dongguan’s Minglun Hall, and construction began in 1929, with the building completed in 1931 and officially opened in 1932. It is one of the earliest museums established in Guangdong (second only to the Anthropology Museum of Sun Yat-sen University and the Guangzhou Museum).
The building is a two-story structure made of cement and steel, covering an area of 489㎡, with a total floor space of 1,249 ㎡. The first floor housed exhibits of animal and bird specimens, while the second floor was dedicated to the Dongguan Library and reading rooms. During the Anti-Japanese War, Communist Party members Zhang Ru and He Dinghua used the museum to promote resistance against Japanese agrression, and it later became a center for the Dongguan Anti-Japanese Agrression Model Volunteer Corps. In the early days of the People’s Republic of China, the Dongguan County Committee of the Communist Party held its first training class at the site.
In 1959, the museum was restored and reopened as the Dongguan County Museum. The Former Site of Dongguan County Museum and Library stands as an important witness to the people of Dongguan’s fight for national independence during the War of Resistence Against Japnese Aggression and is a physical testament to the development of modern museums in Guangdong. It holds significant historical value and was designated as a provincial heritage site in 2022.
