Gaoyao Academy
Also known as the Gaoyao Confucius Temple, Gaoyao Academy is located at No. 42, Zhengdong Road, Duanzhou District, Zhaoqing City. The academy was originally founded in the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty's Chongning period. It was rebuilt in the second year of the Ming Dynasty's Hongwu period (1369 AD), burned down in the third year of the Ming Dynasty's Tianshun period (1459 AD), and then rebuilt again in the eleventh year of the Ming Dynasty's Jiajing period (1532 AD).
The academy still retains ancient architectural structures such as the Honggong Gate, Dacheng Gate, the west corridor, and the Dacheng Hall. It covers an area of about 3,000 m2 and faces south. The Dacheng Hall features a double-eaved Xieshan (hipped) roof, with five bays, measuring 23.8 meters in width and 20 meters in depth, with a total area of 460㎡. The hall is supported by 36 camphor wood pillars, with stone floral-basket-style bases. The upper eaves are supported by 24 sets of dougong (bracket sets), and the lower eaves by 32 sets, all crafted with fine materials. The dougong system extends three jumps and six layers, with a single span of three down-turned brackets. The beams are beautifully painted.Gaoyao Academy preserves the distinctive architectural features of Southern China from the Song and Ming dynasties, making it an important cultural relic that reflects the history of local education and cultural development. It holds significant historical and scholarly value.
In 1979, Gaoyao Academy was listed as a second batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units.
