Former Site of the Huangpu Military Academy
Located at No.170 Junxiao Road, Changzhou Street, Huangpu District, Guangzhou, the Huangpu Military Academy was founded in 1924 with the assistance of the CCP and the Soviet Union. The academy, initially named the Chinese Kuomintang Army Officer School, was led by Chiang Kai-shek as its first president, with Liao Zhongkai serving as the party representative. It established several departments, including the political and educational departments, and saw prominent figures such as Dai Jitao and Zhou Enlai serve as political department directors. Key military leaders, including Ye Jianying, Nie Rongzhen, Xu Xiangqian, Wang Baili, Du Yuming, and Guan Linzheng, either worked or studied here. By 1930, the academy had held seven sessions and established branch schools in places like Yantang, training numerous military and political leaders who made significant contributions in the Eastern Expedition, Northern Expedition, and the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
The current site of the former academy includes the main campus, Dr. Sun Yat-sen's former residence, the club, and the memorial to martyrs who died in the Eastern Expedition. During the War of Resistance, the main campus was destroyed by Japanese airstrikes, and in 1996, it was rebuilt to its original design and scale.
The former site of the Yantang branch of the Huangpu Military Academy is located at 38 Yudong West Road, Tianhe District, within the Guangzhou Military Administrative District of the PLA Special Operations Academy. Known as the "Square Building," this two-story structure made of reinforced concrete was initially constructed in 1924 on the west side of the former Guangzhou New Army training ground, serving as a provincial branch of the Huangpu Military Academy. In 1927, students from the main campus were relocated to Nanjing. The site later became a training ground for various military and political institutions. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it housed several military educational establishments.
The Huangpu Military Academy Memorial was established in 1984, and in 1988, the site was designated a national key cultural heritage site. In 2019, the Yantang branch site was incorporated into the memorial.
