Building of Luís Gonzaga Gomes Luso-Chinese Secondary School (Building of the former Pedro Nolasco da Silva Primary School)
Located on Avenida de Sidónio Pais, the Building of Luís Gonzaga Gomes Luso-Chinese Secondary School was completed in 1939. The site was originally the former Municipal Primary School of Leal Senado, which comprised two sections respectively for boys and girls. In 1974, the two sections were merged and renamed Pedro Nolasco da Silva Primary School. Since 1995, Luís Gonzaga Gomes Luso-Chinese Secondary School has been operating in its present location.
The Building of Luís Gonzaga Gomes Luso-Chinese Secondary School is a masterpiece of modernist architecture in Macao. During the 1930s and 1940s, when modernist architecture became popular internationally, this modern style with an emphasis on modern industry and functional design, was brought to Macao by the engineer João Canavarro Nolasco. The building façade is a symmetrical structure made up of simple geometric shapes with minimal decorative lines. The building stretches horizontally, with a succession of glass windows to maximize natural light penetration, fully embodying the modernist architectural emphasis on keeping pace with the times, utilizing new materials and structures, and aligning form with function.
Luís Gonzaga Gomes Luso-Chinese Secondary School, established in 1985, is a public school created by the Portuguese administration in Macao to continue Luso-Chinese primary education and to promote secondary education. Named after the Macanese sinologist Luís Gonzaga Gomes, the school aims to foster Portuguese-Chinese bilingual talents. The bilingual education in Portuguese and Chinese has deep historical and cultural roots in Macao and occupies a unique position globally. This reflects the over four centuries of cultural integration between Chinese and Western cultures in Macao.
