The Building of the Pooi To Middle School (Praia Grande Branch) at No. 779, Avenida da Praia Grande, faced the Praia Grande shoreline in the old days. Built in the early 20th century, the building was originally a three-floor private mansion. This neo-classical building has its exterior wall painted in green, and a façade divided into seven equal sections by columns.
In 1888, the Southern Baptist Convention of the United States tried to promote girls' education in China and founded the Pooi To Girls' Academy in Guangzhou, marking the beginning of Pooi To Middle School. That school was re-named the Guangzhou Pooi To Girls' Middle School in 1919. In 1937 with the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, after multiple relocations, Pooi To Middle School moved to Hong Kong in 1938 and then to Macao in 1942. After the war, most of the staff and students moved back to Guangzhou to resume classes, while some opened branches in Hong Kong and Macao to continue their educational operations.
In its initial days the Macao Pooi To Middle School rented premises from the Baptist Church on Rua de Pedro Nolasco da Silva as its campus. In 1955, the school moved to No. 107, Rua da Praia Grande, the current location of the Pooi To Middle School (Praia Grande Branch). With its continuing expansion, Pooi To Middle School has expanded to 4 campuses, offering education from kindergarten to Secondary Education. The Praia Grande Branch currently serves as campus for a kindergarten and junior primary section.
Originating in Guangzhou, Pooi To Middle School has sown and cultivated its educational efforts in both Hong Kong and Macao, fully embodying the interconnected educational lineage and close ties between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.
