Meixi Memorial Archways
The Meixi Memorial Archways consists of three granite archways built in 1886 and 1891 during the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. Embodying a seamless fusion of Chinese and Western artistic forms, the archways are characterised by incomparable mechanical structures and exquisite ornate carvings, making them veritably rare ancient architectural structures in southern China. The art of Chinese tongue-and-groove woodworking was meticulously applied in the building of the archways, which are engraved with the Chinese characters for ‘imperial edict’ and ‘public-spirited’ as well as other inscriptions. Under the eaves of the archways are stone brackets, drum-shaped stone blocks, and stone architraves, all beautifully decorated with carvings of auspicious animals, flowers and fruits, and the famous Eight Immortals. The archways, along with the neighbouring villages, pavilions, temples as well as the former, Lingnan-style residence of Chen Fang, seamlessly blend into the natural landscape of Meixi, exemplifying the quintessential ambience of the many hometowns of overseas Chinese across the country.
Qi'ao Blessings Parade for Dragonboat Festival
Originating in the Qing Dynasty, the Qi’ao Blessings Parade is a long-standing tradition celebrated on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival in Qi’ao Village, located in Tangjia Bay, during which villagers would pray for favourable weather and good harvests. During the festive period, villagers will collectively offer sacrifices, visit one another, and celebrate and march in the streets.
On the first day of the lunar month, villagers will visit the temples of various deities, cleaning their statues with sea water in front of the temples. The clothes of the Goddess of the Sea will also be changed. After preparing paper floral tributes together with other essential items, villagers will visit one another, and then parade on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival. The statues of the deities will be placed in two sedan chairs for the parade, which begins at the ancestral temple and follows a route that include various important places across the village before finally returning to the starting point.
Qi'ao Historical Trail (Zhuhai Section)
Developed in 1860 during the Qing Dynasty, the Qi'ao Historical Trail was not only a major path along the Maritime Silk Road but also a window for the Chinese to connect with the world. With 'Qi' signifying the Shiqi District of Zhongshan and 'ao' meaning Macao, this historical channel once enabled people to travel between the two places. Nowadays, many of the towns, villages, and residences of modern celebrities along the trail are still preserved.
The Zhuhai section of the Qi'ao Historical Trail consists of two sections. The eastern section connects with several famous attractions, such as Huitong Village, Putuo Temple and the former residence of Chen Fang, whereas the western section is linked to various historical sites, including Yanggong Pavilion, Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion and Lata Stone Fort. While enjoying moments of tranquility and refreshing breezes, visitors will immerse themselves in history as they walk along the old trail.
